Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico
We took a bus from Mexico City to Acapulco which took around 5 hours . The bus itself was quite modern but the road not so with what seemed like millions of speed bumps which our driver had a penchant for hitting way too fast. We booked into the Hotel California - pretty much a run down dump, like in the Eagles song "Welcome to the Hotel California......" It was in the old, seedy side of town. Our room was up three flights of stairs, which has become a bit of a trademark for us. Our legs, arms and backs are getting strong from climbing stairs with packs on.
Acapulco is the playground of the USA holidaymakers. They book all inclusive deals in big high rise and barely leave their resorts. Hotels like the one we are staying in have lost their market share, and therefore money to renovate, so the become the choice of backpackers. It was truly backpacker price at 240 pesos a night (around $18A).
.
As in most Mexican establishments,(probably not the all inclusive resorts though!) no toilet paper is to be flushed - it has to be placed in a bin next to the toilet . That takes a bit of getting used to but when in Rome......
Our room had a minuscule balcony (no chairs) where we would sit on pillows of an evening drinking wine and watching the world go by. Finding a bottle shop that had very dusty wine bottles we poked around and found a bottle of red wine dated 1984 and for only the equivalent of $5. Now this will be amazing we thought. Expectations were high as we sat on our pillows on our tiny balcony at sunset and sipped our bargain and it was ......disgusting! - well and truly "corked". Never mind, Mexico is not really the place to buy wine and this trip promises future amazing wine destinations when we travel through Europe.
The most amazing thing in Acapulco, which we had come specifically to see, happens every day at La Quebrada. It has been a local tradition for 40 years or so for divers to climb the steep cliffs and plunge 40 metres into the water below, carefully timing the entry in the water to coincide with the waves and hence enough depth. Looking at the boiling waves below it seems impossible and then they dive and survive - most impressive!
