After a real "catch our breath" period in Perth where we sorted out and cleaned our camper van, did some alterations and enjoyed many visits with friends, it was time to head North.
Our destination is to be Broome but our MO is not to hurry and to enjoy parts of the northern coast line we have just hurried by in the past
. Whilst we had been to the famous WA icon, The Pinnacles, before we had never experienced it at sunset. The sky was very threatening but the sun broke through just at the right moment and lit up the sky and the pinnacles in an eerie yellow light. Oh, the ambiance of sipping wine and chatting with fellow travellers in our own wonderful country!
We bush camped not far away at Hangover Bay, so we could go back to take more photos in the morning, before the tourist buses arrived, then it was off to Jurien Bay to visit our accountant and then by 4 wheel drive bush tracks to Stockman's cave about 40 kms north east of Jurien Bay. This little known but exciting limestone cave system covers a wide area.
The remnants of Cyclone Darryl was dumping a lot of water in the catchments area (we had heard on the radio that the Great Northern Highway was cut at Walkaway) and as we knew a river runs right through the cave we were not sure if we would be able to go the 3/4 kilometre through the cave. To our delight the river was dry but a rather ominous sign warned that it could flood quickly with out any prior indication.
Were we brave or silly? Not sure! With adrenalin pumping and torches on, we scrambled through as fast as our torch beams would allow but pausing every now and then to shine around and see the magnificent formations of stalactites and wild bee nests. We may have missed the water coming down by minutes or hours.
We'll never know.
