Back to Livingstone for a little R& R - well not too much, when we first arrived we had booked two more tours!
The first was to Livingstone Island, which sits right out in the river, at the top of Victoria Falls
. A motor boat took us out there and the river seemed quite calm with no hint, that in a very short distance, it was going to spill over the edge in such a dramatic way. The view of the falls from the island was spectacular and quite a different perspective from the Zimbabwe side, which we had seen 10 years before.
What we didn't understand, when we booked the tour, was that there was the option to go swimming right at the top of the falls. Not sure if we would have been game enough to do it even if we knew! However with not having our bathers we really did not have the option anyway. The others in our tour swam with a guide out to the centre of the river (it was quite shallow and rocky) and then he carefully guided them, one at a time, right to the edge of the falls. Those who did the swim said it was a scary, but fantastic experience.
As part of the tour we had a sit down cooked breakfast and then were taken back by boat again to the river bank
.
Our second tour was a "booze cruise" on the Zambezi river at sunset. We had by this time met and socialized with three Brisbane Student Doctors and we decided to all do this tour, which was quite reasonably priced at $40US each for food and ANY sort of drinks including spirits. It turned out the cruise was booked for the delegates of an African AIDS conference and we seemed to be about the only ones aboard who weren't conference delegates. It made for an interesting people watching time! We cruised down the river among hippo's and passed crocodiles lazing on the bank and enjoyed the ambiance of good company, food and far too many drinks.
We had a well needed rest day the next day at Fawlty Towers and caught up on some overdue Internet and prepared ourselves for another long bus trip, taking us to Namibia with its amazing sand dunes and (hopefully) our luggage.
