"That's the smallest receipt I have ever seen!" exclaimed the Air Asia Sky bus attendant and he laughed as he showed his colleague. We had just boarded the bus from the KLLCC (Kuala Lumpur Low Cost Carrier terminal) after an Air Asia flight from Perth. Rather than carry bulky A4 size pages printed off the Internet for our airline and bus tickets, I had reduced the size on a photocopier and cut out just the necessary receipt and barcode.
It is all about the weight
.
Whilst we have always travelled light the following five weeks will be a challenge of cabin luggage of 7kg each only.
We had three wonderful days and nights in KL staying at the Royale Bintang, right in the Golden Triangle area, and catching up on some sights we had not seen on previous trips. KL purports to have the largest covered bird park in the world and we enjoyed wandering around and spotting bird varieties from all over the globe. We had lunch one day at 276 metres, in the revolving restaurant, atop the KL radio tower. Avan quipped after going to the Toilet that it puts new meaning to the “long drop” toilet! One afternoon we took a taxi to the Batu Caves, a short distance from KL. These massive caves house a Hindu shrine and a statue supposed to be the biggest in the world.
We had a couple of dramas on day two. Firstly I tried to turn the phone on after charging it and it would not work
. Then we tried to boot up the computer in a free WIFI area and it would not work. Immediately we thought we had burnt out both by a faulty travel adapter. Turns out it was just a co-incidence. Phone was fixed for free by a bit of cordbard next to the battery and the computer was fixed for 200RM (approx $67) by the same technician and neither was to do with the power supply. What a relief!
On the morning we left KL for Penang another coincidence. I checked the hotel lost property in the forlorn hope that my hat may have been handed in. I had left it in a cab the day before and the driver knew the hotel we were staying in. No luck. As we walked out the door we heard a yell “Hey Aussie – and there was yesterday’s taxi driver waving my hat! He had just arrived with my hat – a minute later and we would have missed him.
We took the monorail to KL Sentral Bus station to catch our bus to the airport. Now these Sky rail buses run every five minutes to the airport and at any given time there would probably be around 20 to 30 buses on the road. I held up my shrunken receipt for the attendant and yes, you guessed it – it was the same guy! We had a laugh and decided our holiday had started off with a string of coincidences.
PS: One more co-incidence!!!! Had forgotten - when we caught our taxi to the airport the driver was born and bred in Sabah and had climbed Kota Kinablu mountain three times. What are the chances of getting this particular taxi driver in Perth!
