We are much more comfortable on the country roads we find ourselves on now . They are in good condition and traffic moves very sedately. Frida had suggested we head up north to a town where Mid-summer revelries are legendary and they have a big maypole. It was raining and cold when we arrived and we found out that the celebrations did not start until around 4pm, so it was going to be too long a wait, hence we hit the road again, heading South towards Tanum.

A stop for a picnic lunch on the way, saw us checking out all the gadgets on the car trying to, a bit belatedly, find out their use. On the road again and five minutes later we heard a "ding ding" noise. Alarmed we had accidentally pressed something earlier, we peered at all the knobs and switches and decided maybe we had accidentally left the park brake partially on. "Ding ding" again. Then it dawned on us. It was warning us of speed cameras! We were to find they are everywhere in Sweden and that accounts for the sedate pace everyone is driving at.

Tanum is famous for its rock art that dates back to the Stone Age time and is UNESCO Heritage listed . We got to the Vitlycke Museum (www.vitlyckemuseum.se) just on closing at 6.00pm but the lovely attendant said she would allow us time to have a look inside and at the display outside. She then provided us with excellent advice, map and brochure on where to find the rock art. After viewing two of the closer sites we spotted some basic cabins in a camp grounds and secured ourselves one for the night. 

After a good night's sleep, despite the revelry of Mid-summers Eve around us, we set off next morning for our next UNESCO site, the Varberg radio station. This station is the only surviving example of the many stations built in the 1920's for long range wireless communication. It was built here as there was a clear line all the way to New York. After a look around we set the GPS (now affectionately called Abba) to take us to Denmark.

Travel Tip: The vitlycke museum (vitlycke.museum@vgregion.se) was also the only place to be able to provide us with a brochure giving descriptions of all fourteen World Heritage Sites in Sweden, combined together. This excellent product saved us a lot of research and grief.
