24 Hours In Exceptional Estonia

Tallinn, Estonia
OK, we know 24 hours is not enough - especially for Tallinn! We thought we would slip in and out after seeing the Old Town Historic Centre and we'd be happy . However Tallinn is one of the nicest old town areas we have seen. With friendly people, and cheap everything (taxis, food and accommodation for starters), we wished we were staying longer. If our ferry to Helsinki wasn't booked, I think we would have.
The backpackers we had booked said to text them from the airport and they would pick us up, but when we did text, they replied take a cab and they would reimburse. The cab driver was amazing. He loved his city and gave us a full guided tour on the way in from the airport, for the princely sum of 4 €. This was deducted from our bill of 25€ for our nights accommodation. We had mattresses on the floor and a shared ancient bathroom, but free wifi AND they let us have a late checkout of 2pm!
It is a bit bizarre that the phone we have with us and bought in Australia, is a global roaming phone with cheaper rates and the phone company and phone number we have is Estonian. For the first time in our travels we don't have to put all the codes in . Our phone is "home".
Talking about technology Avan went out to try again to get the old PC repaired. After a bit of run around (including being near the underground when it was evacuated) he was given an address a cab ride away "IT Bus". On arrival the business name made sense, it was an old yellow bus permanently parked in the car park of a major shopping centre and used as a computer repair shop. The advice was, yes its repairable, however we need a week to get a new screen. Too bad ,24 hours does not compute to a week.
Estonians invented Skype. Further, they have wifi everywhere, including public parks and shopping centres and mostly for free.
We dined for lunch on Elk Soup and Elk pies as we watched a Hari Khrisna procession before walking down to the wharf to catch our ferry to Helsinki in Finland. It was all a bit surreal! I think we'll be back to Tallinn.
Footnote: Historic Centre (Old Town) of Tallinn is UNESCO World Heritage listed.
