Fine, warm & sunny, 8-24deg. 28km (tot 378).
We seem to be sleeping much better now that the last of the jet-lag has gone . However as the sun is up at 5:30am and most rooms don't have block out curtains, 6am is the latest sleep in we've managed so far. Sunset has been about 9:30pm so nice long days to wander after dinner.
Following a quick bite at Maccas (yes we know, but McCafe do make our sort of coffee, the local stuff is just so strong it makes our hair stand up!) we headed out on the bikes. Even though it's a rest day the bikes are the fastest way to cover a fair amount of territory with little effort. Firstly we took in the sights and sounds of the ferry terminal and harbour then rode the 200m to the Swiss Border, which is a line on a bike path, just because we could.
Locked our bikes and then went wandering through the Old City. How old? Well the Romans first settled here in 40A.D., so fairly ancient. Some of the buildings date back to the 15th & 16th century and of course there's a fair percentage of modern stuff too. The streets are cobbled but modern ones. St. Stephens Church here is 600 years old this year, but the nearby Basilica is relatively new, only 596. Both are very impressive (OTT actually) inside. We were fortunate to hear the organ playing in St. S. The two were less than 100m apart, seems an indulgence.
Greg doesn't like getting lost first thing in the morning (it's ok later) so we rode to where we will pick up the Rhine Route again tomorrow morning just to be sure we take the correct path. We found that it's not far from our motel so that's handy. The Rhine flows out of the lake at Constance.
We did another small ride in the afternoon around the northern shore of the lake. We ended up eating in the motel restaurant, a BBQ with a salad buffet, which turned out to be a great choice. $62.50 with a .5lt beer each.
