STOPOVER - BASEL

Basel, Basle, Switzerland
Fine and clear 10-24deg, 0km av 0km/h (tot 559km).
Off the bike today but plenty of walking in this sprawling city of 195,000 people, Sw 3rd largest . If you count the people in the German and French suburbs (this is where the 3 countries come together) the city has a population of 830,000. It is believed that the Celts first settled the area B.C, then the Romans established a fort here in the 1st century. A little later, 1460, the Uni was established and the Town Hall was built back in 1501.
These days Basel is renowned for its chemical and pharmaceutical industries and as a cultural centre for Europe.
The Rhine runs right through the city so it has a holiday feel about it as the locals use it as their beach. They have a neat trick of putting all their clothes & things in a floatation device and then just laying back and floating with the rather brisk current. They hop out a few km downstream and walk back and repeat the action.
There are 33 museums (from cartoons to the worlds largest collection of teddy bears) and galleries in Basel so if you are into that sort of thing it could keep you rather busy.
As visitors we get unlimited travel on all public transport. Nice to get something for that 'City Tax' which keeps propping up on our motel bills.
After a cooked brekky in our flash kitchen we started our walking, and walked and walked! Less tiring riding 100km on the bike!
Took in the Botanical Gardens, (run by the Uni)
Starbucks, (ok those with a caffeine addiction think it's an attraction) Central Railway Station, (pretty grand) the Old Town, Town Hall, an ABC (another b..... cathedral/church/castle) and some rides on the trams to nowhere in particular; cause it's free.
A nice relaxing day with more great weather, finished off with a lovely home-cooked meal and a beer.
