MULHOUSE TO COLMAR, BOTH FRANCE

Saturday, June 28, 2014
Mulhouse, Alsace, France
Cloudy with sunny patches and half a dozen spots of rain, enough to don our rain jackets, but then it stopped of course, 15-25deg, 61km, av: 15.6km/h, (tot. 684km).
Wandered for ages looking for an appropriate restaurant for dinner at Mulhouse last night but couldn't find anything we fancied . We both agreed that we should have paid more attention during our respective French lessons at school then we could have worked out what was on the various menus on display. We ended up having a Chinese buffet and it wasn't half bad. Then took in some more sights and sounds of Mulhouse trying to settle our rather full tummies.
The more we saw of Mulhouse the better it got.
At breakfast the Swiss meat, muesli, yoghurt, salad and cheeses have been replaced by stodgy French croissant and cornflakes, ah well when in Rome. At least it was early, 6am.
On the bike at 7:55am and headed north on a rather quiet Saturday.
We wanted to get off the well beaten track and see some of the back-blocks so to speak. So we logged into Mr Google Maps on Wendy's iPhone 5 which is fitted with a local (Le French) sim. We are going to take McGoo with a grain of salt in future as he led us up the garden, or should we say rough, path for a while. We then cottoned on to his errors and got ourselves out of a dead-end track in a forest. No harm done, we still saw some nice countryside and 'back blocks' and were in the motel by about 1:20pm .
Colmar is a tourist Mecca due mainly to its medieval buildings, museums, canals and narrow cobbled streets. It was founded in the 9th century and has been Independent, French, German, French, etc over the eons. It is currently firmly in French hands and we can't see that changing in the immediate future. You discover a picture postcard photo opportunity about every other step, but it is difficult to capture the atmosphere on photos due mainly to the very narrow streets and dodgy light that causes, especially using only iPhone cameras. A mostly overcast day didn't help either. Despite the hoards of terrorists in those stupid little train things puttering around the streets Colmar is truly worth a visit or two.
Italian won the dinner contest tonight gnocchi with chicken for Wendy and seafood pasta Palermo style for Greg. Very nice on both counts.

Narrow streets or whatever, you've done well with the photos to depict the area and how pretty all the flowers are at this time of the year as well. Slowly getting chillier here! The garden loved the rain yesterday.
