AMIENS TO ARRAS

Arras, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France
Fine and sunny at first then partly cloudy, but no rain, 9-24deg, 72km, av. 16.7km/h, tot. 1155km.
Nice breakfast then rode away at 7:45am into a clear and rather chilly morning . The only wind today was slight and behind us. What was the same as yesterday was the terrain, undulating again and a couple of testers to get our heart rates up. Wendy found a little more character however lost a little sense of humour along the way.
Although we saw dozens of WW1 Cemeteries it would be just too depressing to stop at them all. So today after a brief stopover in Albert, a lovely little place on the Somme, we continued on to Thiepval, the French - British Memorial for the the Somme. There's some graves there but its main purpose is a memorial to the 75,000 souls whose remains have not been found. At the entrance there's a small display centre and shop, both very tastefully done.
Arrived at our motel at 2:20pm and after some routine admin tasks went off to explore the city hall, with its historical displays, and the Grand Place which was completely surrounded by a fairly sad 1920s attempt to reproduce the great architecture of the 17th century. At least they tried.
It was pasta and beer for dinner, both cycling energy foods.
