A rainy day with Lady Liberty - Day 11

New York, New York, United States
This morning I contemplated washing my hair - the travel problem, "can I squeeze one more day before it looks gross?" Glad I didn't, I was a drenched by lunch time.
We started the day in fine weather, jumping on the Subway at Times Square, only to find they were doing work on the line we were on, so had to get off at a different stop. This is confusing, because you have a planned navigation once you make it back out into the sunlight. We found Wall Street and saw the bull and the little girl, surrounded by a hundred other tourists. They are still pretty cool. There were a lot of little old ladies taking the bull by the balls to have their photo taken. We needed a coffee and popped into a diner for a terrible coffee.
We had booked tickets for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Ferry at 12pm, so made our way there a little before to go through the major security check. Soon we were herded onto the ferry and on our way, as the rain started. We were standing at the front of the boat, sheltered behind a pillar as the rain drove at us. We couldn't really see a lot, the visibitly disappeared with the sunshine. They sold out of ponchos on board at $3 a pop. We got off and were told to keep moving as we walked out into a massive downpour. There was nowhere to hide, all shops were spilling out with people sheltering. We squeezed into a gift shop, absolutely dripping. They were selling ponchos for $7.95 and they looked like they had sold out - until another box arrived! The crowd went crazy, the box wasn't very big. We managed to get ours and we were back into the rain again. We had tickets to climb the platform. We didn't book early enough to get the crown tickets but that would have been really great, as you get to climb inside the actual statue to the top. We toured the museum and read about the construction and then we climbed the stairs to the top of the platform. Once there, we got to go out in the rain again! We walked around and looked up at Lady Liberty as the water flowed off her and onto us. We had had enough by now. Unfortunately, so had everyone else. We joined the queue and stood in the rain, until we were herded back onto the ferry. And then the sun came out.......!
With squelching shoes and dripping hair we hopped back on the subway and made our way back home, stopping at a store for a lunch of vegetables to eat at home, while we dried off.
We booked tickets online to see a comedy show, Blank! The Musical at the Broadway Comedy Theatre on West 53rd St. It was a fantastic show in an intimate space. At the beginning they got us to contribute ideas, we voted on our phones and they put an amazing, hilarious musical together. We created a show called "That's My Taco, Mr President" with hit songs such as Hot Sauce Where it Shouldn't Be, When Melania Cries and Froggy Froggy Hot Pot, a dance called The Slinky Banana and the dramatic line "you got nothing - enchinada". These all came as suggestions from the audience and the 5 actors, a 3 piece band and a stage director had us laughing non-stop. It was a really great night.
On the way home we stoped at the Gotham West Market on 11th, just around the corner from us. We only just discovered it tonight. There are some great looking food places there, but we stopped for the ice cream at Ample Ice Creamery. OMG! - we both had the Ooey Gooey Buttercake in a pretzel cone - vanilla ice cream with gobs of St Louis style ooey gooey butter cake. Dinner done!
