St Paul de Vence and Cannes

Cannes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azu, France
Today Mike and Jude went off to explore the town of Cannes and Ken and I headed to the hills.
We drove to Fondation Maeght, a modern art gallery . There was an exhibition by Gerard Garouste, a troubled, but very creative and talented artist. The gallery is set in beautiful gardens with sculptures and water installations. There was a really amazing one by Pol Bury, with counter-levered stainless steel arms moving up and down. It was a great space and the art was fantastic.
We drove around for a while and found the medieval village of Saint Paul de Vence. It was pretty and the buildings were interesting. They had mostly been converted into shops. There were a lot of people there (Ken read something about this being the most visited village in France?) It did feel quite commercial and lacking a bit in the historic feel, but the buildings were pretty. We found a back street to wander where there were no shops and few people which was nice. We also found an Italian cafe and had a coffee and jam tart, which tasted just like Ken's mum used to make. Very good.
We headed back down the hill to Cannes. Somewhere along the line Stella, the GPS, got awfully lost and confused . We ended up 12 kms from home with her telling us we had reached the destination. Fortunately, the car has its own GPS and we programmed that. This was not completely successful as this one wanted us to drive right past our apartment. Odd, but we were home.
Mike and Jude made their way home. They had had a lovely morning checking out Cannes. They had seen the sights, the Casino, the shops and the fast cars. Jude had managed to buy a couple of pairs of nice shoes, so a successful day out.
We chilled for a bit before donning the bathers and walking down to the beach. It was about a 20 minute walk (power walk behind Mike who tells us he has his walking legs now) to La Croisette. We got there at about 6pm and the beach was still packed, the sun still had sting. We found ourselves a square inch to put our towels. The water was lovely and cool. With the beautiful backdrop of the hills and Cannes and boats in the bay, it was a gorgeous place to be. We lay on the beach and watched all going on around us, trying to determine the story of everyone (Sugar Daddy or Biological Father?)
After a walk back home, we sat on our lovely balcony. We had sent the boys out to buy food earlier and we enjoyed a lovely al fresco dinner, overlooking the ocean and watching out for fast cars driving by. The boys seem to find them exciting anyway.
It was a lovely end to a lovely day.

This is where I was afraid the GPS would get lost. I think we will invest in a good map as well when we get there. With 5 days in Nice we could end up back in Italy before we need to get back there!!
