Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland
We were woken bright and early by workers outside our hotel window. There is some sort of works yard in the courtyard behind. We are only one street from the railway so maybe it has something to do with that. Anyway, it was a bit annoying at 6.30 in the morning!
Breakfast was included so we checked that out, it was pretty good and had us ready for the day .
We made our way back to the shopping area and had a bit of a look, buying watches for the girls and myself. There are a lot of watch shops!
We continued onto the Old Town again and went into the Fraumunster Church and admired the beautiful Chagall stained glass windows. Not as spectacular as the ones in Sarrebourg, but still pretty amazing. The entrance fee was only 2CHF each, something is cheap in this city!
We stopped at a coffee shop and looked at the menu. No one was in a hurry to serve us and we noticed that a double espresso was going to cost $10AUD so we left! We ended up in Cabaret Voltaire and paid the same price but justified it with some historical/artistic talk about Voltaire and the anarchic Dada art movement.
Pretty shopped out and horrified by prices we decided, as an afterthought, to go to the Kunsthaus Zurich, the art gallery. We paid our 15 and 10CHF (for the student). Not expecting too much we started in a Giocometti gallery. Ken loves a Giocometti so I moved on and soon there was a Picasso, a Bacon and a Pollock . Not bad. This was downstairs in a small exhibition, but when we got upstairs we were blown away. The art is amazing, so many big names represented with premier pieces of work. A room full of Van Goughs to yourself is pretty special. Monet, Manet, Cezanne, Dali, Matisse and so many more. It is a better place to view than the D'Orsay in Paris as there are no crowds and lots of space. We should have know it was full of great stuff, they have their Gates Of Hell out the front like a piece of public art.
I didn't think Ken would ever come out but he did and I realised that I had missed the Water Lillies so went back up and had three massive Monet's to myself. Amazing gallery.
We headed back home, wandering through the beauty of the old town, and packed our bags up for the last time. They are getting tighter and tighter, hope they don't burst.
Out for our last meal, with nowhere in particular in mind, apart from Ken wanting to go to one of the big beer gardens we had seen. As we were walking along the river we saw some bright ropes strung between the Mattensteg bridge and the street railings. Thinking it was some sort of art installation we went to have a look and discovered there were tightrope walkers crossing on them. They were incredible to watch. Some were so good and some just learning but it was enthralling and we stopped and watched for quite a while. There was a smaller span for the tourists and wannabes to have a go. They were very brave! This bridge is near the Dynamo Jugendkulturhaus, a cultural centre with a bar . We couldn't find anywhere to sit and did feel quite old with this hip crowd, so we moved on!
Ken thought the beer garden was in the Neiumarkt area and I got him there without a single detour. It was nowhere near where he wanted to be so we kept going and I got to where he really wanted to be, Bauschaenzli, near the Stadthausquai. We had a drink here and it was really quite festive and busy, but the food was pretty basic, hot dogs and chips. I wanted something nicer for our last meal so we walked back to Lot 5 in Europallee and got a table there. We had a really nice meal there and even got home the quick way, ducking through the train station. Zurich is pretty easy to get around, we had been finding short cuts all day. Probably didn't need to walk quite so far yesterday! But when you are exploring there really is not wrong way (which is what we tell ourselves when we continually get lost).
An ice cream on the way home and we were done. Ready for the big trip home tomorrow. Zurich has been fun. It is incredibly expensive and busy, but we did expect that. It is probably the area we were staying, but it was grungier that I thought it would be. Not in an unsafe way, but it had more texture than just being another beautiful place in Switzerland.
