Schilthorn

Mürren, Bern, Switzerland
We woke to clear sky outside our room which meant that the views over the mountains were perfect. We could see forever and the big three were all in the picture, Eiger, Munch and Jungfruau. This seemed like the time to get up the mountain. We quickly had breakfast and made our way to the cable car. There were some little clouds forming but we were hopeful.
We bought return tickets to Schilthorn, costing $173AUD . This mountain is where the Bond movie On Her Majesty's Service was filmed a long time ago, but they still use it as quite the tourist attraction. The cable car was packed with other hopefuls and it was a spectacular ascent all the way up, to 2970metres above sea level.
The clouds got there before we did and were continuing to blanket the mountain. We got a bit of a look as we arrived but then we were covered in clouds, seeing a short distance in front of you was difficult. We saw the clouds from all the viewing platforms and went out onto the rocks to see some more and get away from the crowds for a bit.
We decided to wait it out and visited the Bond display, which was actually quite good. It became obvious that the visibility wasn't going to improve so we went down to a lower level of the mountain, Birg. It was a little better there. We had a cup of coffee and enjoyed the free wifi for a bit. Then I got a FaceTime call from Maureen which was lovely. She got to see a bit of mountain and a bit of cloud too!
Birg has a skywalk around the edge of the mountain with glass and gratings to walk over, seeing a sheer drop below . We walked and enjoyed the facility, Ken threw some snow and after 4 hours we gave up and headed back down the mountain. The views were not to be seen today, but it was still pretty up there in the clouds.
The hotel is a short walk from the Cable Car station so we dropped in and ended up having a siesta. All that mountain air is exhausting! Once we were rested we caught another cable car to Stechelberg, down the mountain into the glacial valley, 771metres below Murren. We caught one to Gimmelwald and then changed to Stechelberg. This ride was very steep and so spectacular. The sheer rock face, formed by glaciers, is so high and then the valley below is green and lush with a river running through, filled by the waterfalls that run down the rock face.
Once in Stechleberg we walked along the river track, past little farms and meadows.
We went to the Trummelbach Falls. They were quite amazing. It is a series of waterfalls formed inside the mountain. You get the funicular up and then wind your way down. The thunderous sounds of the water is intense .They are so powerful and beautiful, illuminated where it is needed to give a great effect.
Back onto the track we could see base jumpers jumping off the mountain, their colourful parachutes catching the light. They are jumping from about 400 metres, getting amazing views as they make their way down into the valley.
It started to rain as we made our way into the village of Lauterbrunnen. We could see a couple of Contiki buses pulled into a camping village and groups of young kids making their way back from town. We had a drink at the pub as we got into town. It looks like a nice place to stay and seems to have a bit more life than Mürren at the moment. But Mürren has the views of the mountains.
We had walked for a couple of hours. It was a pretty easy walk, apart from the rain at the end of the day. We got another cable car up to Gritschalp at about 7pm and then the train back into Mürren, where we packed up once again.
The skies had cleared and the views were awesome.
We had dinner down at Edelweiss, I had soup and Ken had pizza. We shared an apple strudel for dessert and walked the short distance home. The mountains were done, Zurich tomorrow.
