After anchoring in Thompson Bay (town of Salt Pond) for two nights, we turned northward to Calabash Bay where we anchored off the Cape Santa Maria Resort . Simply Beautiful!!!

June 13th, 2014 – Georgetown to Long Island – Crossed the Tropic of Cancer!

Hello all,

We are "officially" in the TROPICS!!! Enroute from GGT to Long Island, we crossed the Tropic of Cancer. It must be warmer here...the water temp went up from 33.5 degrees Celcius at our beachy Stocking Island anchorage to 36.5 in Thompson Bay. The water in Thompson Bay almost felt too warm. Bath-like.

From there we rented a car with our friends Dave and Rita (Bliss II) and toured the southern end of Long Island. It was a fun day and we saw many of the sights including Dean's Blue Hole, (the deepest blue hole in the world), the Old Salt Plant (and all the salt flats), many churches, and ruins of churches, and Clarence Town which is the largest town on the Island

From the town of Salt Pond (Thompson Bay, Long Island) both boats, Bliss II and Inspiration, sailed up to the northern end of Long Island. It was a beautiful day of sailing ("wing on wing" for much of the time - main sail out on one side, foresail out on the other side, wind coming from directly behind us) and all four of us were thrilled to finally be going in the "right" direction, wind-wise. (The prevailing winds at this time of year are from the SE which makes it a bit challenging to sail south but now we were heading in a northerly direction.)

We are now in Calabash Bay. We are both anchored right off of beautiful Cape Santa Maria Resort. They are a Canadian owned resort and are very welcoming to cruisers. We are able to go ashore and use some of their facilities. Here, take a look-see: http://www.capesantamaria.com

Next, Tony and I will be heading back to Georgetown to pick up a package, and then we've decided to spend a little bit more time exploring this area with Bliss II.

Let me just backtrack to Georgetown for a moment...

Unfortunately, (or maybe fortunate that we were in a larger town?), I was down with the flu for about ten days while in Georgetown. I can report that I went to the Government Clinic a week into being sick, and it was a small, but excellent, facility with a Head Nurse taking care of most patients, but a doctor on call . I was put on an IV (which I'm convinced was some kind of miracle drug!...boy! did I feel better after that!!!) and prescribed antibiotics for seven days. Total cost: $63 USD. All better! :)

We met another lovely couple in GGT when we were anchored next to them at Stocking Island. It was actually Nicky, the dolphin, who brought us together! Patrick and Regina, on the Jamaican flagged vessel "Esprit" approached us on the beach one afternoon asking us about the dolphin that had circled our boat for so long! We started chatting and never really stopped!

Tony made sure that my birthday was a special one, and planned a lovely dinner out with our friends from "Bliss II" and "Esprit". Birthday pictures have been posted to the blog! It was fun to celebrate "Bahamian style" at the Peace and Plenty hotel. They were having a "Rake 'n Scrape" (Bahamian live music and dance) which turned out to be a great event!

That's all for now! There are LOTS of new pictures on the blog...four new entries. So please enjoy!!!
