A little week doing nothing before leaving Belém

Belém, Pará, Brazil
Coming back from my boat trip to Macapá, I felt like I deserved some "idle" moments, like I mostly enjoy. Just walking around and letting things coming to me.

The same sunday that I arrived I went for a little late lunch close to my hostel, where they had churrasco, barbecue skewers (brochettes in French) with salad, rice, and yes, feijado, the black beans . Fine for me! I took my plate to an outside court, covered with corrugated metal sheets, so we were in the shade... and I started enjoying my lunch. In the back of the place, a little stage, and see, some musicians are installing things. Aha. Music? yes! Samba music! A singer, a tambourin, a djembé, a big drum with a deep sound, and a ukulélé. Oh I enjoyed so much these lovely rythms! At the end of the song, I gave a little applaus. I was the only one! People here consider the music as "normal". Well, I am a foreigner, so I will go on giving an applause! The singer looked at me from far and smiled, and much later, when I wanted to leave and the music had stopped, he came to thank me for "las palmas", which now I know, means applause ;-)

At one moment it started to rain, tropical style, and really, no one could hear them any more! They tried another song and then gave up, went for a drink and resumed twenty minutes later when the rain had stopped.

In the meanwhile a lady came to offer me "um bolo", a piece of cake . I didn't order... seeing my surprise she explained, it was a birthday party, therefore the music, and they offered cake to everybody there. Was I intruding? No of course not! So I went to the family table to congratulate the two young men, 16 and 18, who's birthday was celebrated. Isn't that amazing! When I started to get up to leave, I even did not have the time to go say them goodbye, they were there already to give me a hug! Who told me to take care because Brazil was dangerous?

Today, early in the morning, a young man at the breakfast table tells us there are free tickets at the Teatro La Paz, very close, for the concert tonight, Harp and Piano! So I went to stand in the line to get some tickets together with other hostel guests. In the evening, we were all there, and discovered a lovely old renovated theatre! The concert was, how could I say, family style. The two artists had fun to play, the harpist was a funny older lady smiling all the time! In the audience, lots of families and mothers with little children who were not always quite, but that was ok, nobody "hushed" and in fact, I felt like this was "music for everybody". Eventually the children were quite and we really enjoyed the music! After the concert I was invited to join the group for a glass of beer, so nice! I am always feeling touched when young people invite me to join them! I left around 11 pm, because I still had to pack for tomorrow! Andrea, my 20 years old roommate, came back around 2 am. ;-) I am too old for that ;-)
