Waking to the Sounds of the Citta

Lecce, Puglia, Italy
Early morning, no light coming into the room, shutters closed tightly....but I hear the Sounds as the city wakes up on a Saturday, dogs barking, kids yelling, vespas swerving, people greeting each other. Time to begin a day in a new place. The host gives us our own espresso pot to make coffee, it is just too strong, so we opt to use his version of a keurig, I am missing my cappuccino. There are homemade cakes, cereal, yogurt, breads and fruit-all on a help yourself basis. We eat a quick snack and head out
Warm, sunny we spend the morning going into lots of churches each one more ornate than the next ...The Piazza del Cuomo is filled with bleachers for tonight's religious event, we watch as dozens of young volunteers scramble about decorating and fixing chairs with signs indicating who sits where. We walk for hours, stop to see excavated ruins of a amphitheater which seated 20,000 ...unearthed when they built a bank of Italy in the pizza sant' Oronzo. We stop and have two different foccaccias, and watch the parade go by, shirts saying the craziest American sayings and Mickey Mouse plastered on every baby item...
We head back to the b and b, town has shut down for the afternoon, and we have joined in.....
Shutters closed, eyes closed, just for a bit.
We return, the ordinance ceremony begins with bells ringing, voices singing, seems all the cardinals and bishops are here, the entire town is out. We are still unsure as to who and what but it was a big event neverthless.....We watch for an hour along with thousands, it doesn't end until two hours later. We come upon a wedding, bride and groom kneeling at the altar in an ornate church tucked away in a courtyard. We want to see them but the priest goes on and on, guests make faces and walk in and out, we give up. Today we did see two other brides just strolling through the town, their beautiful gowns dusting off the cobblestone streets, one groom even sported a top hat.
We decide to try a nearby restaurant, a "tourist fixed menu", 14 euros, GC(GIancarlo in Lecce, Charles in Ny) has the orrechiette with tomatoes , followed by an octopus stew-Don't squirm, he loved it. I had ceci e tira, a local pasta made with beans and fried bread, delicious, then a fish of unknown origin, tasty. GC had rose and we watched the evening parade. Sitting next to us were two gals from Dublin, we had a great conversation with them sharing traveling stories, They supplied info on Edinburgh, one of our bucket list cities. I told Mary and Yvonne that they would be famous before the night was over as I would write about them in my blog and here it is.
We then walked through the city, thousands of people out, listening to street performers(sounded like Bob Dillion), puppeteers, dancers, magicians, and vendors selling all sorts of items. People eating gelato and crepes filled with nutella. Dogs, baby carriages, soccer fans standing in the streets watching tv's, you know when there is activity because they roar. US ,we are wondering how the Jets and Yankees are doing, as we are in a space vacummed free of ANY American news, we are the only Yanks in town and call it a night at MIdnight..
