A jagged collection of skyscrapers outline our view as we sail in. A big city, A Manhattan twin. We depart for a closer inspection, riding the tram to its central core. The Yarra River flows by with the Old Flinders Train Station to our backs. Its nine clocks reveal schedules and “meet me at the clocks” is a neighborhood refrain.
We, however, are headed to the massive (23 buildings) of the Vittoria Library. This metropolitan city was a gold rush Mecca circa 1850- 20 million ounces of gold were mined. During Queen Vittoria’s reign Marvelous Melbourne surfaced, the richest city in the world.
One of its legendary characters was Ned Kelly. A bush ranger morphed into a bank robber. His gang would not only steal money but they would burn all the mortgage papers!!! At their last showdown they donned metal suits of amour and helmets. Kelly survived 20 direct hits but then faced the hangman’s noose. His last words, “Such is Life” became a city mantra.
John Batman, a Tasmanian, created huge structures throughout the town. Batman City was suggested once for its name.
Melbourne has the largest standing Chinatown. We have lunch there off one of its “laneways”. Magnificent ornate arcades were created in its “Gilded Age”. We wander through and then see the 888 monument symbolizing a revolt for 8 hours of work, 8 of sleep and 8 of play.
Our Greek guide mentions to us that there is a large Greek and Italian population in the city having migrated after World War II

Every day is a new adventure! It sounds like you are exploring a ver civilized city..... I know that there are a lot of Italians in Australia. Many arrived there in the late 1800’s. I hope that you can get to visit their version of “Little Italy” (if there is such a place, of course). Hugs to Charles.
