The storybook beauty of snow covered mountains and ocean greet us as we arrive at the northern port of windswept Aomori. Translated as “blue forest”, hills great a hue that was a landmark for fishermen. 30,000 years old yet no old buildings remain- destroyed in WW II.
Their summer Nebuta festival is their trademark. Huge, artistically created lighted floats, carried in a parade with Haneto dancers and music. The vibrance of these paper constructions is only hinted at in the photos we take at the museum. Their size was determined by the street width and electric wires.
Photo 1- This float represents a benevolent God who grants people the power to overcome their challenges and achieve their dream. The last float is of Gozu Tenno, this god will fight off the coronavirus!! Both winners paraded in 2023.
We walk through the quiet city streets and visit the Udo shrine (670). A peaceful respite in the city’s port area with garden and pond.
Dinner with a Floridian couple we met on the aircraft. At last nights dinner , a couple on our table was from Rockville Centre, we did not know them but knew many of the same people. Dance show and then our own dancing to 50’s and 60’s- great band.
A: 697 American, 694 Japanese, with Aussies and Brits in 3rd and 4th. Last weeks cruise had over 1200 Japanese
Q. What fruit is Aomori famous for- used in their food and sake?

It is amazing that you met a couple from Rockville Centre. That proves that we live in a small world. I loved the video of Charles playing the cymbals.... a born musician!

Can never escape Long Island it seems. Dad fully in tune with the bands, he reminds me of those clapping monkey stuffed animals…

Those floats look incredible! Sadly all this travel is still not helping Dad's sense of rhythm, he should buy those little symbols to practice at home.
