A Memory of Dad

Island of Ortigia, Sicily, Italy
We breakfast with Giovanni, a wonderful host.  We head off to the market to get a “take away” of that sandwich.  Gaetano smiles and treats us to a spinach panini while we wait , as  he creates his masterpiece-a wonderful combination of fresh ingredients.
We stroll through the fresh market , a slip of a street where the ingredients in a Sicilian cookbook are displayed on fragile stalls,  a man with a microphone shouts fish available on his huge display.
We circle the island, to reach the road to Catania.  We are stopping at Museo Storico dello Sbarco Sicilia 1943.   As a soldier my dad arrived her with the 2nd Division on July 10,1943.  He arrived at Licata and traveled to Palermo.  He was so secretive about his war experience but he did tell me how he spoke Italian to the soldiers here.   The museum has many interactive exhibits and a multitude of photos by Phil Stern. I learn a great deal.  This trip back in time so long ago, was a bittersweet ending to this adventure- a wink from dad …..

How amazing is it to walk in the footsteps of your dear father, Tony? The photo of him is wonderful..... the same smile that I remember when we were growing up! Your Anthony resembles your father in so many ways.... that is the real ‘wink’ from your father!!!
