Tallinn, Estonia, Estonia
Another bright sunny day, warm. After breakfast we head into town, an easy walk to the medieval core, a network of cobblestones and alleys. The city is beautiful ,brightly colored buildings, hundreds of years old. We walk through the cobblestones streets, we keep meeting people who are doing the same Rick Steve walking tour. A family from Wisconsin turns us on to a website Gate 1 where she gets great deals, they are true world travelers, We are going to have to broaden our horizons.
We pass the KGB headquarters on Pitt Street , nicknamed the highest building in town, "because when you are in the basement you could already see Siberia"We head to the town hall and square, a pharmacy, the Raepteek in operation since 1422 .
Our last stop is Kiek in de Kok (means peek into the kitchen) , where we take a great tour of the underground tunnels from medieval times. Originally there were 46 towers in the town before WW2, now there is one.Our tour guide Kadi is great, the tunnels have been used for many purposes, refuge during the bombings in WW 2 and for punk rebels during the seventies, there is even a ghost...... Thankfully, we are barred from the section where the spiders and bats now call home.
