Destinatio-Sonoma and it was love at first sight.
The town's beautiful plaza was having an art show, we chatted with locals , watched artists painting ,visited their centerpiece- City Hall.In their historical fort, a wonderful docent Dave shared its story. I never knew that Mexico had forts this far north and where we are standing was once Mexico.... and birthplace of the California Republuc
Off to Benzinger Wineries , the only biodynamic one in this county. We climbed on a tram ,a tractor pulled us through the vineyards. NO chemicals or sprays used, they recycle all wine by-products. Their sheep aerate the soul with their hooves, eat the weeds and recycle that into the ground. They have cows who contribute daily to their compost. Their plants and flowers attract insects that eat other insects and the bat and owl population assists in that task.
In 1970's a couple from NY came out and started this winery. Now 5 generations later it is thriving vineyard. We had cool Chardonnay at the first stop and then five more delicious tastes afterward. Visited their multi-million $ storage cave
Returned to the town ,I explored its Franciscan mission and C headed to the "bad ass" car show. We then headed back, relaxed by the pool
At night we dined at the restaurant at the Culinary Institute, joined by our new Miami friends ,wonderful gourmet dinner. ( Lydia and Dave are great company and we hope to continue our friendship with them )
