It’s a cat eat dog world in Pemuteran

Pemuteran Beach, Bali, Indonesia
Elenka told me yesterday, with the craziest laugh, that she likes to have me around places like pools and restaurants because the niños run when they see me. I knew not how to respond.
                                                                                                           .
The beach village of Pemuteran is on the north west end of the Isle of Bali. It’s a spot where people come from far and wide for the diving. The diving is good, but you wouldn’t want to come here for the beach. The beach-water is fairly murky, and while they are in the process of trying to re-create a close-to-shore reef, it will take time.

Last night during dinner, Elenka and I talked about the food in Bali, that we’ve not been to a single restaurant where the chow hasn’t been superb. “Fresh, spicy, but not too hot and flavourful” were the words and phrases that jumped from our mouths when trying to describe the cuisine. It does come at a price, though. You can expect to pay as much as 3.5 - 4 Euros per plate. That’s like $5CDN - $6CDN back home. “Easy come, easy go,” Elenka says.

Last night I came up with the bright idea of writing to the owner of the place we stayed in Sideman, with a proposal. I would explain how multicultural it is in Toronto (CTU), and suggest that he send a representative over to scout out the possibility of opening a restaurant at the CTU. With a little Googling I found that there are just two Indonesian eateries back home - both fast-food and not necessarily Balinese - and that both of them are in the burbs. I would recommend that the CTU be the spot for this new high-end establishment. My proposal would be that Elenka and I would house the representative while he’s in Toronto. We in-turn would want nothing except the opportunity to eat Balinese food at the CTU. It’s a win, win as I see it.  If anyone is conversing with Elenka please don’t tell her of this. It will be our little secret.

Last but not least: Feral dogs pretty much rule the animal kingdom in Bali. The only time you’re likely to see a cat is at night, and they’re frightened of just about everything, even large bugs. Back home dogs are content to scarf down at the cat’s litter-box. Here in Bali, I’m afraid, dogs may have taken it to a whole other level. But in Pemuteran it’s different. Cats are everywhere and dogs are few. Perhaps, Pemuteran is a cat eat dog world? In any event, the sheer number of cats is why there are so many feline photos in this entry.

Again beautiful pictures, nice looking bungalow and yes the coral isn't as pretty or colourful. The cats with the big ears look like there is some Lynx mix there. Nice pictures of Ellen.

Thanks for taking my mind of the -7C on the Niagara Peninsula today. As usual, a morning smile with brilliant colours.

I second that: thanks for taking my mind off the cold in Toronto though it's nice and sunny today. Love the bungalow and pictures of the kitties.

Bali is even more beautiful than I imagined. And I imagined to be like Paradise.... the colors, the carvings.. your room! And of course, Ellen. Your underwater photos are National Geographic worthy. Absolutely stunning. I'm amazed at some of the close-up shots. I don't think I can gush anymore without embarrassing myself - and you, Jack! I just read an article on how the chemicals in (human) sunscreen is beginning to harm the coral reefs - in Hawaii and other places of high tourism. It is a serious threat.
