To the Highlands

Stonehaven, Scotland, United Kingdom
Leaving Edinburgh, we crossed the Forth Bridge and turned right - well, east, into the county of Fife and on our way to St Andrews. We travelled past farming land most of the way, and arrived by the water near the ruins of the Cathedral of St Andrews. It has a prime position by the water and is set in park like surrounds. It came into use in the 12th century as a Catholic church but fell into ruins after the Scottish Reformation when Catholicism was outlawed.

St Andrews has another historic building right on the water - St Andrews Castle ruins are in a wonderful position with views up and down the coast. Also here is the pier, an unusual concrete structure that adds to the charm of the town. But the town is mostly known for its University and the golf course. Right near the old golf course we found a picnic area by the beach. We have found it almost impossible to find places to stop the car either to have a break or to look at the view, so this area was surprise. As well as this the beach was wide and the sand white. Very nice.

Then to Stonehaven where we are spending two nights. A lovely little place as it turns out. We took a walk by the water last night and then came back to the Royal Hotel (where we are staying) for dinner. I had to try the 'Cullen Skink'. What a name for a soup - haddock, potato and onions - very thick and very tasty.

Then today, a long walk around the area in the morning and a drive inland in the afternoon. We walked to the Dunnnotar woods and then the castle. The wildflowers here are in full bloom and just lovely, and the castle has an amazing position by the water. There are cliffs and bays in each direction. Very picturesque.

Tonight we had dinner at the historic Tollbooth Restaurant here. By the harbour, it has a mainly seafood menu. I had mussells for an entree and we both had scallops for a main dish. The food was very fresh and tasty. We have found the seafood here very good.

Tomorrow to Inverness.
