Getting organised!

Lockington, Victoria, Australia
Saturday 4th February, BlazeAid camp, LOCKINGTON, Vic. 9°-23°C.
The weather of late has been cool and pleasant. We had a short downpour yesterday that saw me sprint out to my van to pull its lid down. It’s definitely the easiest way to close three windows quickly!
Martin, our covering coordinator, has introduced an evening muster - a quick summary from each team about their achievements for the day. The other two looked over to me when the kitchen team is unexpectedly called! First desserts and baking, now spokesperson. It seems I am taking over by accident! I use the opportunity to assess everyone’s satisfaction with our service. There are no complaints.
The current catering system of looking in the fridge each morning and winging it has, however, given me the jitters when we are so responsible for fuelling our workers well. Accordingly, I have found a white board and map out a rough menu for the next four days, starting with all the small bits and pieces left in a large chest freezer. Last night was a mixed grill, barbecuing various sausages, turkey burgers and bacon. The four Safeway mushroom burgers were not winners…
Today I have given myself the day off! We have sufficient cakes, an extra pair of hands in the kitchen and the weekend pay rates in this job are atrocious! I take a trip in to Echuca to look around. There is very little sign of the recent floods that were so prominent in the nightly news in town, apart from muddy water lines on trees and tree trunks scattered along the banks.
And as a treat for my efforts, I shout myself some fresh real coffee. Two weeks of instant muck is my limit!
