Saturday 11th February, BlazeAid camp, LOCKINGTON, Vic. 14°-32°C.
It’s been a quiet week of established routines. Kerrie has returned from six days off and is training Martin in the finer points of running a camp. I start the dishwasher up in the morning, the others clean and shut it down at night. We each have our favourite salad lunch prep. I produce cakes, biscuits and desserts. The others excel in vegetables. We are a fine tuned machine these days.
A good number of farms have been completed. We are down to one team of fencers, nine diners in total. This camp is likely to close soon and relocate somewhere further east towards Shepparton.
We take a quick run in to Rochester during the week for food and office supplies. For a town recently deep in flood water it looks remarkably normal. A closer look reveals rubbish skips and shipping containers outside many houses and shops stripped of their interiors. There are still people living in vans in a public park opened up for them in Lockington.
With a 5kg bag of carrots included in this week’s Foodshare delivery, I bake a double sized carrot cake which has been very well received. Half of it goes before I even got the icing on! Who doesn’t like carrot cake?
And in the continuing effort to clear the freezer, I extricate a 5kg turkey. Never cooked a whole one before.
The others head to the pub for sneaky Saturday drinks…
The RecipeTin Eats website gets me through though and a full roast including baked stuffing, onion gravy and apricot streusel is enjoyed by all! Glad it’s the cooks’ day off tomorrow though!
But I’ll probably make something for the freezer for next week. Entertainment options here are limited!…
