An arty weekend off

Echuca, Victoria, Australia
Sunday 26th March, BlazeAid camp, ECHUCA. 14-22°C
How nice it is to come home for another break?! Caravans and speed boats are streaming into Echuca as I leave on Friday and I am not unhappy to be leaving town. The people in the van that arrived at 2.00am overnight made enough inconsiderate noise and more will be arriving over the weekend…
This time I take the Goulburn Valley Freeway home via Shepparton to visit the SPC cannery shop. It’s a vast warehouse in the centre of town these days, with much more than just SPC and Ardmona products. I price check on my phone as I cruise the aisles. There are no seconds bargains as I remember and some fruits are actually cheaper at Coles. Nevertheless, just like a trip to Costco, I emerge with more than I intended to buy - although tomatoes, shampoo and conditioner will always get used!
The highly regarded Shepparton Art Museum also gets a visit. It is a striking building on the lake and holds many noteworthy pieces.
Saturday at home brings The Whitlams in concert with the Black Stump Band. The latter are talented country musicians and the night is full of Whitlams songs reimagined in country style. It is worth driving three hours for… there is not a weak spot in the whole night!
The art theme continues on my return trip to Echuca on Sunday, via the Bendigo Art Gallery and the current “Australiana: Designing a Nation” exhibition. It “surveys the iconography of Australiana in art and design through key chapters in our history to the present day.” Many pieces I have seen at the NGV and others are new delights.
From there, it’s a slow trip north with a never-ending stream of traffic heading south from the boat races. It’s weary driving and I’m in bed before eight.
