The Beach

Monterrico, Jutiapa, Guatemala
The black sand beaches of Monterrico are unlike anything I've seen before. The sand is black since it's volcanic rock and the town sits out away from the mainland a short distance. To get here, we had to take water taxis through narrow channels of mangroves. This is Guatemala's most popular beach but only really comes alive during the weekends. Unfortunately for me, some salad I ate with my lunch came back to haunt me all night Saturday. However, I didn't go down without a fight. I figured if I drank enough beer, I would get the bacteria in my stomach drunk, rendering them incapable of causing problems and I could carry on as normal. This didn't work and I advise you not to try that. On Sunday afternoon, I said goodbye to all my friends from spanish school and started working my way toward El Salvador...

stop by at the Hotel Cafe del Sol next time
Good thing you came to Monterrico but should have stayed at the pretty Beach Hotel 'Cafe del Sol'.
The food is excellent and no problems with salad or fruit. Sunsets every evening at happy hour with a juicy cocktail on the beach terrace.
In case you wanna come back or tell your friends about it, check it out: www.cafe-del-sol.com

have a nice trip
