Big Buddha, Koh Samui

Ban Mae Nam, Surat Thani, Thailand
One of Koh Samui’s bizarre sights is the Big Buddha Temple. As you may imagine, the central attraction here is the Big Buddha. However, there are also various shrines and other stuff. There is a huge emphasis on good fortune and you can, for only 500 Baht (£10) have your fortune told! (We gave that a miss, deciding that we were better off with a tenner in our pocket, especially since that could feed us for about 5 days here).

However, we were intrigued by the Buddha slot machines . There was one for each day of the week, containing a Buddha, flashing fairy lights, something like a roulette wheel and a slot for your Baht(s). There was also a big display of numbered fortunes in front of them. What we couldn’t decide was whether you put money in for the day of the week you visited, wanted good fortune for, your birthday, or any other reason. So we chose a day at random, hoping that when we put in our baht, the flashing lights around the Buddha would stop to give us a number. No way!

So they had our baht but we had no fortune! Maybe we should not have treated it so frivolously!

There were also some bizarre statutes around the temple, of which we have, of course, furnished you with photo’s here! Enjoy Big Buddha Temple!
