Smokies tomorrow!

Cherokee, North Carolina, United States
We left Myrtle Beach and drove toward the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As we pulled into Cherokee we were hungry AND the Badgers were playing. Got some food at KFC and watched the game on a laptop while sitting on the ground next to the van. Badgers were knocked out of the Sweet 16 by Notre Dame - bummer!

We had a terrible time finding an accessible room - finally settled for a small room in a bad motel along a river that Mike said he would make work . Shortest toilet you've ever seen - no grab bars. Tiny door opening.) There simply was no other vacancy anyplace - we drove up and checked at at least 6 places. Cherokee has grown by leaps and bounds since our last visit due to a large, new casino.

The next morning we woke up and drove into the park. We had beautiful weather and enjoyed driving through Smoky Mountain National Park. The boys were troopers - posed for a photo and then hiked (with Speed!) to the top of the Clingman's Dome trail. We also stopped at the visitor's center at ___ where spring trees were blooming with pink flowers and there were TONS of guests. This was basically like opening weekend, and it was great to see so many people appreciating the park. We didn't have much time to dawdle anyway, so we left through Gatlinburg (ick) and Pigeon Forge (a million times ick) and hit a bunch of traffic in both places. Bottleneck of the worst of America. (Sorry to be so negative...NOT...OUR...STYLE.)
