An earthly rainbow

La Gaulette, La Gaulette, Mauritius
The rains have started and as the afternoon was likely to be wet we made a early start. Today a trip up the mountain to a waterfall which showed three geological eras in the rock formations. Then onto some sand dunes in the hills. They have been formed by clay soils leaching through the basalt and the formation of iron and aluminium oxides. These repel each other and so the colours separate into 7 different earth colours.
I'm still playing with my new camera and as the sun wasn't shining intensely I decided to try the vivid colours option on the camera. It certainly works.
We had coffee and all before any herds of minibuses or coaches arrived then back down the mountain to a beach on the west coast.
I decided to read by book in the shade of some trees whilst Stephen went to find a Turkish barber. ( I know we're not in turkey but you can only try) No luck. Just as he rejoined me on the beach the wind starting blowing and this seemed likely to be the precursor to the rains. It was but we made it to a cafe in time.
At a lull in the rain we drove along the coast back to our apartment and found a Martello tower. This was built by the British who wanted to abolish slavery and were concerned that the French population, who were disgruntled about the changes, would bring reinforcements from France. The tower wasn't attacked and remains well preserved as a museum. An excellent guide speaking fluent English gave us a tour from the cellars which was split into 3 parts, for water, food and gunpowder to the first floor sleeping and eating quarters and the roof with the rotating canon. The officer in charge had a separate sectioned room on the first floor. A historical delight.
