Kooddoo, Gaafu Alif Atoll, Maldives
The sun was shining when we woke up this morning, and the wind had calmed somewhat, so typical since it is our last few days here!
We were able to sit outside for a leisurely breakfast, and then we secured some sun loungers by the pool, while I waited for the tide to rise so I could get out to the drop off and do some snorkeling.
Eventually the tide rose sufficiently for me to jump off the end of the walkway without being in danger of getting shredded by the shallow coral, and I proceeded to make my way slowly along the reef edge.
It was still a little choppy but nothing compared to previous days and I was able to have a pleasant snorkel, checking out the coral bommies and watching the fish at their cleaning stations. You could see the looks of intense pleasure on the faces of the Parrotfish as they had their skins picked clean by the tiny blue cleaner wrasse.
There were a few black tipped sharks cruising around the coral and I managed to have a decent amount of time watching the wildlife and snapping a few photos. There was a little squall while I was out there, but it didn’t really have any effect other than to take the light for a few minutes.
I swam back to the beach after about an hour since I didn’t want to aggravate my jaw by having the snorkel in for too long. I might try again tomorrow though if the conditions are good.
After lunch I decided to try and get some sense out of the water sports kiosk guys. We have hardly been able to use many of our vouchers and I wanted to see if we could at least get in some jet skiing.
I somehow managed to make a booking for 10am tomorrow for both of us to do their ‘jet ski safari’ which is really just half an hour following the guide. It took the guy about 10 minutes to explain to me all the intricacies of ‘how jet skiing is done in the Maldives’, which basically means that, unlike Bali or Malaysia, they won’t let you just hoon around for half an hour and run over the other guests. I battled to keep a straight face while the guy asked me, literally a second after I had just told him, my room number. I kid you not, and I thought my memory was bad!!!!
