Leaving Launceston behind we took the long route to Coles bay via St Helens which was a pleasant little town that was nestled on an estuary. The beach was close by as well and it was very similar to Dunsborough in that the beach houses continued along the main road out of town and the beach was long and the water was calm.
We stopped there for lunch and ate our pies at a park overlooking the marina
.
We drove on through the typical Tasmanian countryside and extremely winding roads through the mountains until we reached Cambeltown where we stopped to look at the tree carvings. We had gone 100kms out of our way to see these carvings because we thought that there were a lot of them but turns out there are only three. Oh well, it was a nice drive anyway.
The wildlife carnage on the road is terrible here. We see hundreds of possums and wallabies killed everyday and we even saw a wombat on the side of the road today.
Obviously the logging trucks just go through and wipe out anything in their way.
Scenic lookouts are few and far between here but we managed to find one on the way here as well as a winery to stop at which had a beautiful view of a large wetland. We had tried their wines at Cradle mountain so we bought a few more bottles.
On arrival at Coles bay we found our beach house which is situated on a hill overlooking the bay and has a magnificent view. It's a lovely house and has the living areas upstairs with huge windows at the front and a deck overlooking the bay.
We stopped at the marina and booked a cruise around Wineglass bay for tomorrow before hiking up to the lookout which is in the Freycinet park. It was about a 50 minute round trip and had lovely views of Wineglass as well as Coles bays.
We will do the 11 km hike which goes down into Wineglass bay and around the Remarkables mountain range on thursday.
