Back in Hobart today after leaving our lovely White beach cabin.
We discovered another historical place which was a coal mine settlement manned by convicts from the Port Arthur prison
.
It was perched high on the cliffs on the other side of the penninsula from Port Arthur and was scattered throughout a large area of bush overlooking the sea.
A lot of the houses that used to be there were reduced to just rubble but there were a couple of partially intact buildings, mainly the tiny cells that were used to house prisoners in solitary confinement.
The coastline there was spectacular, as usual and the rocky inlets looked like they would be good for snorkelling.
After walking around the area which had very few visitors as it is a little tucked away and of course most people go to the more popular Port Arthur, we continued on our way to Hobart.
We got to Hobart city after lunch and, since Travelodge had mucked up our hotel booking which I had booked months ago for their airport hotel, we had to find our way through the very busy and confusing city to get to their city hotel.
The city, like Perth has many one way streets, only here, if you miss your turn you end up going up ridiculously steep inclines which narrow dramatically and then have to find your way back down again
.
I don't think I would like to live anywhere near the city, the streets are just too steep and at the moment it is blowing a howling gale. When we got out of the car in their driveway the wind felt like it was going to rip the door off the car.
The hotel doesn't have a proper restaurant so we will have to venture out later to find somewhere to have dinner.
We just came back from having dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant just down the road. It was starting to rain when we went out so it was best not to try and venture down to the waterfront which was quite a walk from here.
Anyway the banquet that we feasted on at the very popular restaurant was very nice accompanied by a couple of glasses of Tasmanian wine.
