Day 0 - Anchorage

Anchorage, Alaska, United States
Its like getting ready for a track meet. The day before we used to do light exercise, take it easy, try not to get nervous about the following day, wonder how our bodies will perform, wander around pretending to be interested in what was going on around us, but not really.

Beth and Gordon left yesterday for Arlington . Today I spent washing, fiddling with my bike, mailing extra stuff home, going to a local Methodist church, and mainly, planning my route across the continent. I struggled with distances and route options, and then settled down to make some bookings along the way, so that I would have a well defined destination each day. Needless to say I only got half way across, before I collapsed.

I have settled on the Canada route -- a direct line across the continent from Anchorage to Ottawa. From there, down through the Adirondacks to Arlington.  My one side trip will be up to Fort McMurray to visit the site of Canada's oil boom. Having visited Williston ND, I thought it would be fun to compare scenes. Canada has no freeways across the country, in the American sense. Its main highways are very similar to the US route 2 I took coming West.

My last dinner in Anchorage, at the Glacier Brewhouse was amazing -- I was only able to sit at the bar -- but the chicken I had confirmed my suspicions -- that place deserves its crowds of delirious customers lusting for a table.

The longer I stay in this town, the more I like it. I am no longer bothered by the random empty blocks. We walked around with Beth, and seemed to see more of the people, the color, the setting. It is beautiful.
