De Visita en Montevideo

Montevideo, Minnesota, United States
I have always wanted to go there, and now was my chance -- just a few miles south of US 12 in Western Minnesota. I arrived in Montevideo in the late afternoon and was so excited I asked the first people I met (mechanics in a repair shop) to take my picture with a big sign. They did. They
didn't respond so well however, when I explained I wanted to send the picture to the 'real' Montevideo in Uruguay . "What do you mean the 'real' Montevideo?"  they said immediately. "What do you think we are?"   I realized then this was their home and Montevideo was its name, and that's it. So what if there was a 'sister city' with the same name in South America? However, there has been a lot of official interaction between the two cities. The main street of the town has a big statue of Jose Gervasio Artigas (the founding father of Uruguay) in a little park. Very nice. The logo of the name of the town is patterned after the colors of the Uruguayan flag. And everyone is aware of a short advertising clip filmed here recently, where someone punched in Montevideo into his GPS and ends up in Minnesota instead of Uruguay.

The run through the high prairie is never dull. They are in the middle of the wheat harvest, and the silos in the towns are overflowing with grain. One sees large stands of corn mixed in with the livestock fields, surprising this far North ? In the late morning I crossed the Missouri River, and visited the memorials to Chief Sitting Bull and Sakakawea which overlook Lake Oahe from the Cheyenne River Reservation.

Very nice Jim. I gather you're only 2-3 days from home now!

Good morning, Jim. Did you go through Watertown, SD? My mother grew up there, and I spent time in the summers there with grandparents and aunts and uncles while growing up. David T.
