Walking Toulouse

Toulouse, Midi-Pyrénées, France
Started the day at 8:30 AM. Went down for our included breakfast which was very un-French like but we needed the food this morning. Our tour director, who we won't meet until tonight, left us a map highlighted with the must see sights of the city.  We started walking the town about 11 AM after checking out a restaurant for Wednesday night's dinner (another hotel recommendation). We went to Basilique Saint-Sernin which is the largest Romanesque basilica in the world. It was large but very plain except for its stained glass windows. Visited Le Capitole built in the 1750's which is the Toulouse City Hall. The section of the building we visited is more like a museum filled with statues and paintings that depict historical events of Toulouse. Next we went to the TI and walked down some other side streets to get a flavor of the city before a rest stop at the hotel. Walked over to Couvent des Jacobins a Dominican monastery built in 1229 which was nicer on the outside than the inside. The bell tower could be seen from many locations in the city. Continuing on our route, we went to the Hotel d'Assezat which was a mansion built in the 16th century for a wealthy merchant and is now the Foundation Bemberg (a museum).  We helped a Japanese couple find their way to the Bemberg and we talked for a little while (ran into them again a few days later in Rocamadour). We then walked over the Le Pont Neuf bridge which spans the La Garonne River. The last stop of the day was a patisserie where we had a cappuccino and a pastry (yum). Rested up until our 6 PM get together to meet the tour director (Fanny) and group. There are only six mixed couples. The rest are  single women, women traveling without husbands or women with partners. We are only 22 since one couple had to drop out due to family problems. We all introduced ourselves then went to the hotel dining room for dinner. Everyone was jet lagged so it was an early night.
