Visiting Mont St Michael

Crepon, Normandy, France
Left Saumur promptly at 8 AM this morning for the approximately 4 hour drive to Mont St Michael. Drove through Le Mans where the 24 hour Formula 1 race is held each year and through yellow fields of rape seeds that granola oil is made from. We had our usual rest stop halfway through the trip where Fanny bought us cookies to go with our coffee. After the stop, Fanny told us the history of Mont St Michael, the abbey built on a giant rock in the middle ages. Arrived at Mont St Michel around noon. Took the shuttle bus to the causeway dropoff point for a great photo op. While walking as a group to the base of the mountain, one of the ladies tripped and fell in the street beaking her jaw. She is going home tomorrow where she will have surgery. We sat on some rocks at the base of Mont St Michel and had our cheese, salami bread and wine picnic lunch. After lunch we walked up the steep street and climbed the steps to the top of the mountain for our tour of the abbey. The street up seemed like a re-creation of Main Street Disneyland. Fanny took us through the gothic abbey which was started in 1017 and took 500 years to build. She explained the history and various stages of build out. It was an exhausting tour due to the number of steps both inside and outside the abbey. There are still monks who reside in the abbey, a cold, stark place to live. We left Mont St Michel about 4 PM and stopped at the hospital to drop off suitcases for the couple who can't continue the trip. Got to Crepon in rural Normandy (north man lands) about 6:30 PM. We are staying in a 35 room farmhouse dating back to the 13th century and it is wonderful. We are upstairs overlooking the main courtyard in a timbered ceiling room that has a cozy feel to it although it was probably once a barn. Had a nice dinner at the farmhouse. Not only has the food been good, but the plate presentation has been very nice.
