Crepon, Bayeux, Caen, Normandy, France
Started out going to Bayeux at 8:45 this morning to see the Bayeux Tapestry embroidered nine centuries ago which depicts the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. The tapestry is 270 feet long by 20 inches tall and is done in eight pieces although you can hardly tell where it is put together. The scenes are numbered and the recording device describes the story behind the tapestry. The colors are still pretty vivid considering the age. We had a chance to wander the town of Bayeux before driving to Caen to visit the Memorial of Caen, a museum devoted mainly to WWII but designated as "history for peace." They had a section devoted to the Holocaust. It was nice seeing so many school children of all ages visiting the museum. There is a section devoted to the cold war era.as well. We drove by a traffic circle dedicated to Eisenhower and saw the British War Cemetery in Caen (tomorrow we have time devoted to visiting the American Cemetery). We next went to Juno beach where the British landed and Arromanches a town nearby. We saw the remains of the Phoenix Caissons, which was the artificial harbor created for the British portion of the D-day landing. Also saw the steel structures that were created to get supplies and equipment on shore. Spent about an hour in Arromanches viewing the beach and city. It was pretty cold but no rain. Returned to our hotel about 5 PM for some down time.
