Touring Takayama

Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, Japan
After a buffet breakfast at the hotel we took our bus for about 5 minutes to the rail station here in Takayama.  We met our local guide for our walking tour of the city.  She took us through a lot of the small side streets to the morning market along the river.  The Miyagawa Market is held everyday and consists of stalls and brick and mortar shops.  Our local guide bought some special ingredients to be used in our cooking class.   It was cloudy and cold and switched between rain, light hail, and snow showers    It was nice to reach our next stop, a local temple, where our cooking class was to be held (the highlight of the day).   There were 6 of us at each cooking station and we shared the duties preparing fried zucchini, glazed baby potatoes, vegetable rice delight, Miso soup  with tofu, cabbage salad, and a Matcha tea dessert. When everything was finished we prepared a Bento style lunch box for each of us to enjoy in the common area of the temple.  We also enjoyed a small glass of plum wine with the meal and received a cookie treat to take with us.
After lunch we toured the Takayama Jinya , an old government outpost used during the Edo era - 17th to 19 century .  Since we had to take our shoes off to tour the building, we all had frozen feet.  Tatami mats don't provide a lot of insulation.  Final organized stop of the day was at a local sake brewery to learn about the brewing methods.  Of course we got samples.
