Petra, Jordan
It is hard to believe it is November. Two more days of the whirlwind tour. Today we are off to Petra at 8:15 AM . We were driven to the border by an Israeli tour bus where we disembarked for the start of an hour's worth of processing through Israeli and Jordanian border patrol people. We were screened by two different groups from both countries, walking through a no man's land in between. When we got to the Jordanian border we met our new guide for the day. The Jordanian bus had, in addition to the guide and driver, a tourist policeman. All groups over 10 are required to have this extra person. We drove through Aqaba a town of 100,000 across from Eiliat and then into the Jordanian mountains reaching a height of 6000'. Made a few tourist stops along the way to Petra making the drive about 3 hours. Petra is an amazing place. You walk down a very narrow gorge (Siq) filled with archeological sites and geological formations until you get down to the Treasury, Roman Theatre, Palace Tomb, etc. Our first view of the Treasury as we came out of the canyon was magnificent. We covered about 4 miles total, down the hill and back up to the visitor center. Our group was amazing. Since the temperature was in the mid 80's maximum (we lucked out), everyone walked down and back although not all together. Seven of us went down to see the Roman Temple before heading back. We could have used another 3 hours to view the area. We had lunch at 3:30 PM in Petra. On the trip back to the border we had a quick bus tour of Aqaba which our guide told us will look like Dubai in another 10 years.   (Would have loved to spend a night in Petra and an extra night in Eiliat to enjoy everything both areas have to offer.)
