Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
Day 14 – After a quick visit to the Victoria Market for more fruit, a real breakfast of bacon and eggs, and talking to Lisa and Paul re fire situation in San Diego (they went home but have a lot of ash to clean up), we caught our flight to Hobart, Tasmania at 1250pm. Had to move our watches ahead 1 hour since Tasmania is on DST and the rest of Australia doesn’t change over until Sunday morning. It is difficult keeping up. Think we go ahead 3 hours next week when we go to NZ (time will tell-no pun intended). Today was a holiday in Hobart for the opening of the Royal Hobart Agriculture Show. A lot of businesses were closed and some restaurants added a 10% holiday surcharge (since they have to pay their workers more). Walked around the wharf area and had a great fish dinner at Fish Frenzy at the Elizabeth Street Wharf. We had fish we never heard of before: Blue Travella and Flathead (shark?). It was excellent, particularly with their house wine. The wharf area reminds us of a miniature San Francisco. Hobart even has hills similar to SF. Our hotel was built in 1834 by convict labor and is now classified by the National Trust. It was renovated in 1999 by Doherty. It is very European in feel. Since we don’t want to take out a second mortgage for breakfast, we will probably visit the local Starbucks in the morning.
