Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand
Day 22 – We checked out of the hotel at 10am and then drove up the Hooker Road to a trail head for Mt. Cook. We hiked up to a swing bridge for some photo ops, visited a memorial to hikers lost on Mt. Cook and other nearby mountain peaks then headed for Dunedin on the Southeast coast. The road went by lakes and one view was more spectacular than the next. Stopped for lunch in Oamaru and arrived in Dunedin about 4pm. Dunedin is home to the University of Otago and is a well preserved Victorian/Edwardian heritage city. Wandered
around the Octagon area of the city, had a glass of wine in this swinging area with the locals, and then had a Thai dinner. Seems to us that Friday nights are set aside for drinking more than eating and there were more than just the college kids enjoying the sidewalk tables. After dinner we did some grocery shopping for the next few days snacks and called it a day.
