Traveling the TranzAlpine Rail

Greymouth, South Island, New Zealand
Day 28 – Our breakfast this morning at the B&B was by far the largest and best we have had on the trip. Had yogurt, granola, juice, fruit, eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, toast with homemade jam, and coffee (hopefully we will walk this off tomorrow in Christchurch). Left the B&B about 9am for the drive to Greymouth. As usual it rained on and off all the way. It was about a 120 mile drive which we did in just under 3 hours. We turned the car in at the train station, bought some sandwiches and other lunch goodies at the market then caught our TranzAlpine train to Christchurch. The train journey is 143 miles and goes
through the Southern Alps, Arthur’s Pass and Arthur’s National Forest
including the 5.25 mile Otira Tunnel, then down to the Canterbury
Plains. The normal time through the tunnel is 15 minutes but due to slippery rails it took us 40 minutes to get through today. We got into Christchurch about 45 minutes late. Took a shuttle to our hotel then went out for a Thai dinner almost next to the hotel. Turns out the restaurant is owned by the same person as the one we ate at in Dunedin.
