8:00 a.m.-- Excellent breakfast at Mrs. Margaret Wynne's Sunset Lodge B.&B. in Ennis. 3 ladies from Kansas City at table next to ours. One quite voluble and entertaining.
Impressions of Irish highways: narrow, bumpy, & crowded with reckless drivers (native Irish or Yankee tourists?)
Drove to Shannon to check on insurance coverage for our rental car
. Our concerns satisfied, we took off for Limerick on way to Killarney.
Stopped at service station on outskirts of Limerick for directions to Killarney. Young Irishman, Aidan Moloney, courteously gave directions for negotiating 3 “roundabouts.” Asked his name and told him mine. He said “You’re one of us.”
Stopped at viewpoint between Tralee and Killarney and took 3 photos: slide film ASA-100— shot of Helen, George, & Pat looking over green valley to east with rolling farmlands & hills in background. Color print film ASA-100— 2 shots of above view south & north.
Continued on to Killarney, found parking spot in center of town near International Hotel. We all ordered minestrone (Irish variety) and scones. Excellent white French table wine in small bottles, complemented good food.
Ross Hotel next door was filled up, but had 3 bedroom luxury apt. available
. Mr. Patrick Treacy (young Irishman) accepted Aer Lingus vouchers for 2 nights. Normally cost 126 pounds ($214.20) per night. (Such a deal!)
Ring of Kerry trip arranged for next morning, also covered by Aer Lingus vouchers, including breakfast at hotel before trip. Having narrowly escaped being wiped out on the roads of Ireland, we decided to take the tour and let someone else do the driving.
Had excellent dinner (lake trout) after Guinness (Bob) and vodka-tonic (Helen).
Went to Laurel’s next for Irish music & dancing, had couple of Harps. Heard a lot of Irish(??) music by American composers, i.e. My Wild Irish Rose, When Irish Eyes are Smiling, I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen, etc. Also some authentic Irish numbers which were quite good.
Best part of the show was performance of 4 pre-teen age colleens, who danced animatedly & well, with obvious enjoyment and lovely smiles. Regretted not having camera & flash-unit to record them.
Walked back to apt. with Pat and George, arriving around midnight. Weather cool & lightly raining, but full moon visible through recurring openings in clouds.
Plan to leave hotel in time for breakfast around 9 a.m.
Ring of K. tour to start at 10 a.m. Plan to take both cameras and hope for at least intermittent sun-breaks.
