Storytelling Bus Driver: Should I Feel Reassured?

Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland
9:00 a.m.— breakfast at Ross Hotel compliments of Aer Lingus. Very good meal: porridge (Irish for oatmeal), orange juice, bacon (Canadian), 1 egg & excellent coffee. Made mistake for 2nd time in ordering coffee with cream. (They filled top part of cup with whipping cream— too rich!) Should have settled for milk brought to table with porridge. (Slow learner!)

Boarded Volvo bus for trip to Ring of K . Driver Denis Fenton wheeled that thing through places unbelievably narrow & twisting, barely missing bicyclists, pedestrians, other buses, & ordinary motorists unlucky enough to be in our path.

Denis entertained us by telling jokes in his thick Irish brogue. One, about the crow and the bull, went as follows: An Irish crow got very sick and weak. His feathers were falling out and at last he could no longer fly. He fell to the ground in a field where a bull was pastured. The bull looked down at the crow and took pity on him. He said to the crow, “I know how you can get strong and healthy and fly again.”  “How,” asked the crow.  “If you eat my droppings you will regain your strength.”  “What have I got to lose,” thought the crow.  “If I don’t do something, I’m going to die.” So he began to eat the bull’s droppings, and sure enough, he got stronger day by day, until he was the most muscular and vigorous crow in the area. One day after having his usual health food, he was flying loop-the-loops over the field when the farmer saw him and gave him both barrels of the shotgun, blasting him out of the air and killing him . The moral of this story is that bull-shit may get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there.

We passed through Killorglin, Glenbeigh, Kells, Cahirciveen (where we caught glimpse of Daniel O’Connell’s house), Waterville, Caherdaniel, and Sneem (2:15 p.m.), where, from bridge, I got some great (I hope) shots of stream, rapids, picturesque rocks, and green foliage, with scenic church in background. Used both cameras (one loaded with slide film, the other with print film, both ASA-100).

Bus leaves 2:45 pm

We continued on toward Killarney National Park, stopping along road overlooking the Lake of Killarney, for photographers’ benefit. Took several shots, both slides and prints, about 3:30 pm.

At 3:50 p.m., bus stopped at Killarney National Park. More photography: shots of Muckross Abbey ruins (hundreds of years old). Also of scenic bridge near park entrance, and of jaunting cart, with horse & driver.

Returning to city of Killarney, learned that we could not have luxury apt. for 3rd night, but helpful people at Ross Hotel got us reservations at 3 Lakes Hotel for tomorrow night. They accepted Aer Lingus vouchers, but mentioned 1 pound supplement per person. Pat said that was not correct & we should not pay it. Knowing we had a place to stay when we returned, we left.
