Passing Time with old John Power-- and New Friends

Seattle, Washington, United States
705 from Shannon aborted, flew out on 177 bound for Logan Airport Boston.

Flight loaded with returning tourists, many Irish Americans. Helen sat by English lady (Manchester) of Irish descent, Mrs. Ennis, who was very pleasant & attractive middle-ager.

Tom Downes, quintessential Irish American type born in Boston, regaled us with his tales. Learned that he has nephew Michael Downes in Everett, whose wife is nurse at one of the hospitals— name familiar, maybe Prov. [Providence Hospital in Everett, WA— Dad worked in the pharmacy there].

Take-off from Boston 5:32 EDT, Delta flight 1775 to SLC [Salt Lake City], then SEA. Saw city of Boston from left side window seat. Then saw Finger Lakes in N.Y. & Lk. Erie, St. Lawrence River & Niagara Falls.

Meal on Delta 1775 uniformly lousy. Steak?— inedible; vegetables and potatoes cold, salad limp; coffee?— weak as rainwater & served to me in cracked, leaking cup.

Aer Lingus food far better & really quite tasty. 50ml Powers whiskey with their dinner & 6 oz. (183 ml) French red wine (pinot noir) with lunch complemented these meals nicely & helped pass the time.

5:26 PDT, 2 hrs. from SLC at 29,000 feet. Still clouds below (obscuring land) in every direction as far as the eye can see. No mountain ranges seen anywhere. Clouds covering whole midsection of USA (too bad).

6 a.m. Irish time = 10 p.m. PDT (9/17)

10:20 p.m. arr. SEA (9/18)
2:00 a.m. (9/19)
28 hours
