Twelve Dollars

Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States
Back in January, my friend Tara and I toyed with the idea of going somewhere for her birthday. She and I haven't taken a trip in awhile, and we thought it would be fun. We considered the Kentucky Derby, then considered the Florida Keys. And then on January 4th (I still have the email), I received the TravelZoo weekly email with the best deals. I saw something for $12 a day at an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican through Cheap Caribbean. Ok, I thought, this can't be right. I clicked on the link anyway.

As I started reading, it said you had to stay 4 nights to get the deal. Ok. You could not go before May. Ok. It was for double occupancy. Ok. The resort was called Lifestyles in Puerto Plata.  (PP is on the northern part of the island. Punta Cana is on the east and Santa Domingo is on the south). Ok. So what else is the catch?

Apparently, there isn't one. So yes, Tara and I will be staying at a resort in Puerto Plata for $12 a day - room, food and liquor included.

I know what you're thinking, because we had the same thought. Is our room a straw hut? Do we get the low-grade liquor? Will the food make us sick?, I don't think so and I hope not.
Even with the good deal, we still had to pay for our flights, which were decent. We get into Puerto Plata on Thursday at 2 pm and arrive back on Monday evening.

There were a lot of reviews on Trip Advisor, which I looked at before booking. And the general consensus is this: if you are looking for a 5-star resort with 500-thread count sheets and caviar, you're not going to get it as a $12-a-day guest. But if you're looking for a clean, comfy room on a beautiful resort with decent food and unlimited liquor and a place to catch some sun and don't mind fending off the "Time Share"'s a great deal.

I read some reviews that said folks who book through Cheap Caribbean have to wear yellow bracelets, and because of that, the staff doesn't care about us. I read others that said the opposite. Hey, if you want to make me wear a bracelet and brand me as a "cheap guest," go right ahead.
And while it's not totally ideal for me to be going somewhere so soon after a trip, this was too good to pass up. Why not?

We don't plan on doing much other than relaxing and hanging out. Maybe we will do an excursion, but after all the running around in Spain, I would be quite happy with doing very little.
The way we're looking at it is, you can't drink for $12 a day in Green Bay, Indianapolis, or anywhere for that matter. If anything, we will drink our money's worth. :)
It should be interesting....
