Island of Gozo

Sliema, Island of Malta, Malta
Nowhere near as windy today but the swell in the harbour reminded me to take my sea sick pill. As it turned out, the ferry crossing from Malta to Gozo was very smooth. The ferry terminal is at the far western end of Malta and the crossing took 25 minutes.

The tour I took of Gozo was not as fast paced as yesterday's tour; with more free time to have a coffee or take plenty of photos . However, also like yesterday, the hop-on / hop-off bus route on Gozo would have provided far more opportunities to visit different sights and to stay as long as I wanted at each place.

The tour took in the megalithic Ggantija Temples, the Azure Window, the Inland Sea and Victoria.

According to the tour guide, the Ggantija Temples predate the pyramids of Egypt by 1000 years and are older than Stonehenge. According to Lonely Planet they date from 3600 BC. I don't know if the tour guide's and Lonely Planet's dating are a match. The Ggantija Temples are the largest megalithic temples found on the Maltese Islands. At one time they were thought to have been constructed by pre-historic giants because of the size of the stones used, with the largest stone weighing around 57 tonnes. No one knows how the stones were put in place and the quarry was a kilometre away.

The Azure Window at Dwejra, a huge natural arch in the cliff sculpted by the wind and sea, was amazing . We were allowed half an hour here and I could have spent twice as long just taking photos from different angles.

The Inland Sea, also at Dwejra, is a cliff-bound lagoon fed by the sea from a small tunnel in the cliff. It was actually pretty unimpressive.

We headed to Victoria, the capital of Gozo, for lunch (which was terrible). Before lunch we were taken to view a movie ("a stunning sound and vision experience") on the history of Gozo called, Gozo 360 Degrees. I can't comment on this movie (good, bad or ugly) as I slept the whole way through it. We also visited St Paul's Grotto where he is supposed to have hidden out for 3 months after being shipwrecked on Gozo.

We had 30 minutes free time in Victoria after lunch and I bought some prickly pear jam. just had to buy it because I can't get over that they make products out of a noxious weed.

Before heading back to the ferry for the return trip to Malta, we made a stop at a tourist shop. There was nothing special about this shop (like every other tacky souvenir shop) so the guide must get a commission on sales here.

Once again, smooth sailing back to the island of Malta.
