A clear morning in Shelter Cove; the tide was extremely low (full moon last night) and the rocks were all exposed. LOTS of urchin with whole sides of rocks covered in purple as so many urchin were above the water. I went for a little walk along the tide pools. There were a lot of anemone, very small ones about as big as a quarter or nickel. Then back up to the room to get packed and ready to hit the road.
On the road around 9:00. We took the windy road, Wilder Drive towards Ferndale which was supposed to be about a 2 1/2 hour drive or so. It was a slow drive ove,r rough pavement (and in a few sections, no pavement) and the estimated time on the GPS kept getting longer instead of shorter. We finally ended up at Mattole Road which would eventually take us to the 101. It was a windy road through Redwoods State Park. We stopped for a short hike on the Big Trees loop. Huge redwood trees and it was so beautiful.
We then got on the 101 North to Fortuna and stopped for lunch at the Eel River Brewery. We had visited there the last time we were up here many years ago. I had some mac and cheese with Andilusian sausage. Jerry had some good fish and chips and of course a few hazy IPAs for me.
Then we wound down through the Avenue of the Giants a pace. Stopped at the Visitor's Centre and looked at there exhibits. There have been a lot of floods in this area that have wiped out the little logging towns around here over the years.
Made it to Miranda Gardens Resort. We have a little cabin under the redwoods with an electic fireplace. Went across the street for some ice creams. The place was run by 2 young teen boys that must have been 12 and 15 or so. They were having a hard time serving ice cream to the big family before us
